History
Based on random archaeological finds, it can be hypothesized that there has been continuous human presence for over a thousand years before Christ in the highlands. The occupation of the territory of Fresagrandinaria dates back at least to the Final Bronze Age (XI-X century BC), a period in which a pot with a vertical handle and raised edges is dated (A. Faustoferri, 'Oltre Histonium... 1996).
Fortified Village
The first settlement dates back, as previously mentioned, to the IX century, around a fortress built by the counts of Chieti on a cliff of gypsum rock overlooking the Trigno valley.
To see: Church of the Most Holy Savior, located on Salita Cavour. The original structure dates back to the rise of the village and was later transformed in the 19th century. The historical events of the religious building are related to the castle and the fortified village since it is located at the highest point of the town; Church of the Madonna (the small church of Madonna delle Grazie), of medieval origin, was mentioned by Ughelli as dependent on the Benedictine abbey of Santa Maria di Tremiti. Santa Maria delle Grazie is indeed a Madonna very venerated by the Benedictine monks. The building has been mentioned several times in privileges and confirmations from popes Leo IX (1053), Nicholas II (1061), antipope Anacletus II (1136), and pope Alexander III (1172). In 1279, King Charles I of Anjou donated it to a lay dignitary; remains of the abbey of Sant'Angelo in Cornacchiano; municipal fountain, located in the ancient center. It was built in 1891 when the new aqueduct was inaugurated; Palazzo de Lellis, Palazzo Rocchio, Palazzo De Martinis, Palazzo Cosmo Terpolilli are noble residences located in the historic center and dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries.
Tradition and Folklore
Among the gastronomic specialties: oven-roasted porchetta (1st festival August 17, 1964), treccitella (rolls of tender goat or lamb intestines around oregano stems), viscìcca which elsewhere is called ventricina, and much more: the women learned to use even the less noble parts of the meats or vegetables to create delicacies. Homemade sweets are represented by fragrant taralli and cellipieni, the typical local dessert.
Peasant and Migration Museum
On January 10, 2016, the Peasant and Migration Museum of the Trigno Valley was inaugurated in the ancient premises of a medieval tavern, warehouse, and oil mill carved into the rock, with material mostly coming from free donations from Fresagrandinari citizens. This museum aims to be a testimony of peasant life in a time when there was no electric light, motorized machines, running water and bathrooms, paved roads, telephones, radio, and television.
