Gissi, an ancient lookout between mountain and sea
Nestled on a hill at 499 meters above sea level, with the mountains behind and a view of the valley gently sloping down to the Adriatic, Gissi is a town of just under 3,000 inhabitants located in the Alto Vastese. Woods, vineyards, orchards, pine forests, and streams surround this welcoming village rich in services, featuring a beautiful promenade, a charming historic center that winds through alleys and postcard views, and a vibrant environment full of initiatives, thanks to the cultural associations present in the area. Built on gypsum quarries, the town bears traces of a past that seems to sink its roots even into pre-Roman times.
Things to see in Gissi
Among the many things to see in Gissi, there is the ancient village that holds the souls of a town still bearing the marks of centuries past. In ancient times, Gissi had a castle that, according to sources, dates back to the 11th century. A papal bull from 1208 also mentioned a castrum of Gissi. The castle, which housed the governor, the armory, and the stables, collapsed in 1742. The municipal seat is located inside Palazzo Carunchio, a noble building that arose on the vestiges of the convent of San Francesco d'Assisi, dating back to the 13th century, of which walls, cisterns, and wells still remain. Proceeding along Salita Castello leads to Via La Chiesa, where the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, dating back to 1568, is located. In the pine forest of Santa Lucia, there is also a chapel of the same name, while the more modern Church of San Bernardino is dedicated to the Patron.
Living in Gissi between Nature and Archaeology
Those who choose to live in Gissi find a town with diverse souls, with a long history behind it and a strong vocation for modernity. Among various commercial activities and services, the town also offers a wild and unspoiled natural setting. From Gissi, it is easy to reach Monte Sorbo, a natural area at 900 meters high, overlooking the valleys of Treste and Sinello. The site has been inhabited since the Iron Age, as evidenced by numerous archaeological finds. The life of the town is animated by various events: on May 19 and 20, the feast of San Bernardino da Siena is celebrated, on August 19 and 20, San Rocco and Santa Lucia, and on August 20 and 23, San Nicola and Santa Maria. Ancient traditions still live in the village, and typical specialties of the area, such as the award-winning salami Ventricina, are prepared.
